‘Able to identify with anything’: racial identity choices among ‘coloureds’ as shaped by the South African racial state

The Apartheid South African state crafted Coloured racial identities through a powerful project that signified and positioned them as group was both neither between White Black. Non-Racialism in post-Apartheid Africa has, however, loosened the role of making race. So how has transition impacted ‘Coloured’ today? Informed by macro-level theories formation micro-level identities, I examine identity choices constrained among 50 adults. find are influenced transformations state: racialisation via reappropriating ‘Coloured’; re-formation joining ‘Black’; uplift construction ‘Khoisan’; non-racialist approach to ‘Human’. argue shape, or even lead to, therefore clarify theorises co-constructed formations.
